What would you say is the secret to having perfect skin? One common answer is maintaining a good at-home skin care routine. Another answer that is common it is to protect your skin from the sun. Or other people may say that the answer is Botox®, dermal fillers, and other injectable treatments. While it is true that all of these things contribute to having attractive and youthful-looking skin, none of these things offer the same benefits that chemical peels do. We invite you to learn how you can illuminate your skin with the treatments we offer here in Houston, The Woodlands, and Spring, TX.
Perfect skin almost never comes about by chance. As people get older, they have to work really hard to maintain skin that is smooth, soft, and free of blemishes. Common issues that young adults deal with include acne, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and rough skin. Individuals who are getting a bit older may deal with these things as well as sun damage, premature aging, and skin issues that are the result of toxins and other environmental factors. Individuals who are in their older years have dealt with a lifetime of skin problems that just compound over the years.
Chemical peels can be your secret weapon to having perfect skin. The acid in the treatment is designed to lift away dead skin cells. It causes the top layers of skin to shed. The treatment will also trigger a chain reaction that will make your skin act and look younger. The treatment causes signals to be sent from the living cells underneath that tell them to multiply and then move up. This means that your skin is going to make more collagen and hyaluronic acid. Both of these substances work to improve the skin and make it smooth, soft, and firm. You will also experience the added benefit of having your at-home skin care products work better after our treatments. This is because dead skin cells will not be impeding their penetration.
Determining the Right Peel for You
There are a variety of different peels that are available. They are based on different ingredients. Peels are typically used on the face, neck, and chest. If you are concerned about other parts of your body where your skin may be damaged because of exposure to the sun or for other reasons, you will be able to talk to our practitioners about using our treatments to improve your skin in other places.
It is common for individuals to use mild peels about one time per month. This is a great option for individuals who have a busy schedule. These mild treatments allow a person to get great results but not need to spend a lot of time recovering. The most mild treatments are usually based on glycolic acid, lactic acid, or citric acid.
These treatments are great for helping individuals to improve acne scars and effects of sun damage. They can also address fine lines and wrinkles and help to improve a person’s skin texture and tone. These treatments are great for people who are interested in jump starting a new skin care routine. There usually is not a lot of redness or flaking with mild treatments.
When you have a mild treatment performed, your face will be thoroughly cleansed at the beginning of the treatment. The chemical solution will be applied to your face and neck using a pad, brush, or cotton swab. After the treatment, your skin is likely to look pink. In the days that follow the treatment, you are going to see a gradual improvement in the condition of your skin.
The next option is using a medium strength peel. The difference between this option and a light peel is the percentage of active ingredients that are contained in the chemical solution that is applied on the skin. This treatment is performed in the same basic way that a mile peel is performed. However, you are going to notice a difference in your skin after the solution has been removed from it. Instead of having pink skin, your skin will likely be red. You may deal with a bit of swelling. You are going to notice that your skin will crust and then to peel off in a week or two following the treatment.
Some doctors recommend that an individual use an antiviral medication during the week or two before they have a medium strength peel applied. This is usually the case if a person deals with cold sores on a regular basis. After this kind of treatment, a person will need to avoid exposure to the sun and will have to apply topical cream on the skin in order to encourage it to heal. Most people can wear makeup about a week after the treatment.
As the skin heals from a medium strength treatment, an individual can expect to see an improvement in moderate wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. This treatment is great for individuals who have leathery skin and heavy sun damage. Individuals who are dealing with acne scars may be able to get the correction they are looking for from this form of treatment.
The strongest type of chemical peel that you could possibly have is a deep chemical peel. Phenol peels will help individuals who have an uneven skin tone, sun damage, and deeper wrinkles.
Individuals who have lighter skin are usually better candidates for deep peels than individuals with dark skin. The reason why this is the case is because they do not face the same risks of skin bleaching or hypopigmentation. Deep chemical peels are usually only used on the face. The skin on the hands and chest are just too thin and delicate to handle a treatment like this.
If you decide to have a deep peel, the doctor may recommend that anesthesia be used during your treatment to keep you as comfortable as possible. While you may need a few weeks to recover after this treatment, you will likely feel that the trade-off is worth it. You are going to get longer-lasting and more dramatic results.
How to Prepare for Your Treatment
In the weeks that lead up to your treatment, you should refrain from using other exfoliation treatments, especially ones that use chemicals. You do not want to schedule a treatment with us if you have had a treatment two or three weeks ago. You want to allow a sufficient amount of time to pass so that your skin can heal and so that you can get the best results. Since you want to avoid other forms of deeper exfoliation, this means that you should not have microdermabrasion treatments performed. This is a form of exfoliation that uses a handheld device to gently blast away the outer layers of the skin. If you have had this treatment performed, wait at least two weeks before contacting us to schedule a peel.
You are going to want to avoid exposure to the sun in the weeks before your treatment. Make sure that you do not tan in the sun or in tanning booths. If you have to go out in the sun in the days before your treatment, make sure that you do your best to protect your skin from the sun. Apply sunscreen regularly. If you will be sweating or will spend a lot of time in water, make sure that you apply sunscreen every couple of hours. Wear a hat and take other precautions to protect your skin.
It is important to be as gentle with your skin as you possibly can in the days before your treatment. Make sure that you do not wax your skin immediately before the treatment. You also want to avoid using hair removal creams. We understand that our clients want to look their best and so they may use injectable treatments, like Botox®. You do not want to combine a peel with an injectable treatment. They should be spaced at least a week apart.
As we mentioned above, some individuals need to take antiviral medication before having one of these peels done in our Spring, TX office near Houston and The Woodlands. This is something that you are going to want to discuss with our doctor when you call and schedule your consultation. Most individuals need to get started with the medication anywhere from two to five days before having a chemical peel performed.
Something that our doctor may recommend is that you use a prescription lotion. The goal of using the lotion is to ensure that the treatment provides the most even results. It can also help in the healing process. Some doctors recommend that individuals use bleaching solutions as well.
Individuals who are non-smokers get the best results from the treatments we offer. Our treatments are designed to promote healing in the body, which will give a person a more attractive appearance. Smoking inhibits some of the healing processes in the body. Depending on the level of treatment that you are interested in, you may be asked to stop smoking in the weeks before your treatment.
